Comórtas Peil na mBan
Corca Dhuibhne won the inaugural Radio na Gaeltachta sponsored Comórtas Peil na mBan with a comprehensive victory over Dromid Pearses in the final in Lispole. The tournament was played in tough conditions more akin to winter than summer but to the their credit the teams battled hard despite the inclement weather. This tournament featured four ladies teams from around the county. Castlegregory and Daingean Uí Chúis failed to make the final on this occasion leaving the battle for honours to the girls from the West and South. Corca Dhuibhne really showed their strength in the final. They were powered by their inter county star Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh at full forward who finished the final with a personal tally of eight points, four of which came from play. This was a superb team performance however and there were many others who impressed on the day for the champions. Ciara Ní Shea was outstanding at full back while Neasa Ní Luabhaing did superbly at centre back and even found time to venture forward and score a cracking goal. In midfield Neasa McKenna and Roisín Ní Chonchúir also ruled the roost but it was in the forward line that the West Kerry girls held all the aces. Fiona Ní Chathaín scored 3-2, Cliona Ní Cathaín scored 2-1 while Katie Ní Mhuircheartaigh grabbed three good points from play. Dromid also had some impressive performers on the day. Eileen Garvey in goal made a number of very good saves. Orla Shea, Louise Curran and Sarah Shea were very sound in defence while Fiona O’Connor worked hard in midfield. Niamh O’Sullivan Rock and goalscorers Amy Turner and Johanna O’Connor were sharpest up front. Paddy White was the man in the middle and added to the overall quality of the final by letting the game flow. Jeaic O Muircheartaigh from sponsors Radio Na Gaeltachta and Ladies County Board Chairman Donal Barry were on hand to present the Comortas Peil Na mBan cup to Corca Dhuibhne captain Aoife Ní Chíobhan after the game. They also announced that the tournament will head south to Dromid in 2012. The South Kerry club will play host to the 2012 tournament and it is hoped that even more teams will participate in this wonderful new tournament on the ladies calendar next year.
