What is Green-Schools?
There are now 3564 schools in Ireland registered with the Green-Schools Programme of An Taisce which represents over 83% of all schools in Ireland. Of these, 2306 schools are flying the Green Flag. In the Dingle area there are 6 schools registered with the Programme with 2 schools having been recently awarded: Bunscoil an Chlochair received their 2nd Green Flag for the Energy Theme and Scoil Iognaid Ris received their 4th Green Flag for the Travel Theme.
The Irish Green-Schools programme is one of the most succesful within the international network. One of the main factors in the success of the Irish Green-Schools programme is the partnership between the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce and Local Authorities i.e. the financial and time contribution of the Local Authorities to the programme. Most of the Local Authorities (City & County Coucils) have an Environmental Education Officer (EEO). These officers provide the invaluable on the ground support to schools undertaking the programme.
Green-Schools is a themed programme with schools initially focussing on the theme of Litter & Waste, and working through the seven steps for this theme and applying for the Green-Flag. Once successful, the school moves onto the Energy theme, and then onto the Water theme. This links very well with the renewal of the award every two years
